01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Step past the noren curtain at dusk, and you are greeted by charcoal smoke and animated conversation. Tucked away in Toyo, Koto Ward, Yumenoya is an approachable, budget-friendly izakaya steeped in old-school shitamachi warmth.
Charcoal-Grilled Skewers and Diverse Small Plates
The kitchen's centerpiece is its charcoal grill, turning out everything from skewers of shiro (intestine), kashira (pork jowl), reba (liver), and tanhatsu (tongue and heart) to classic yakitori chicken skewers. Seasoning comes in tare sauce or salt, and letting the grill chef choose the best preparation for each cut is half the fun. Between skewers, diners can browse a broad selection of drinking snacks, from rich motsu-ni stew and hot tofu to vinegared mackerel and chopped horse mackerel.
Handwritten Orders and Classic Pub Rhythm
Ordering here follows a traditional tavern custom: write your selections down on a slip of paper and pass it across the counter. Glancing up at the wall-mounted wooden menus while plotting your next course adds to the charm. Over draft beers, chuhai, or highballs, evenings spent at the counter or table seats feel effortlessly comfortable. Skewers can also be packed to go for those craving charcoal-grilled meats at home.
